What are Year 6 learning about this half term?

Autumn 1

This Autumn, our first Geography enquiry question will be “Coasts: what happens where the land meets the sea?” throughout this topic we will be using atlases and maps to look at coastal regions, researching the human impact on these areas-including the effect of climate change on the coast. We will also be using our interviewing skills when finding out about tourism and whether this is good for these areas. This links nicely to our Music learning – we will be listening to and appraising ‘Fingals cave’ before creating our own compositions and trying to use instruments to replicate the sound of waves crashing.

Our English work will begin by being centered around PVPG (Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar) these first weeks help us be reminded of the basics of grammar and sentence structure meaning that once we get writing we will have greater confidence around what it is we are writing about. Throughout this we will also look at sentence work based around the text ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder. This is a powerful book which focuses around how a community responds when a stranger arrives on their island. To end the half term we will switch focus to gothic literature when writing setting descriptions based in Whitby for our re-telling of Dracula.

In Maths, we will continue with Power Maths. This term we will begin by focusing on place value within 10,000,000, we will then move on to the four operations-learning new efficient methods to solve addition, subtraction, division and multiplication problems.

Our Science topic will be based around Electricity we will be finding out how we can stay safe around electrical appliances, troubleshooting when making circuits, adding new components to circuits and finally designing our own circuit systems.

In Art we are learning how to sketch realistic portraits looking at individual features and proportions of the face before drawing a self-portrait. We will also be using watercolours to create some coastal scenes linking to our Geography learning.

In Computing we will be finding out about AI: what is it? How can it be used in images? How can we create our own AI coding, and then thinking about how ethical AI is? Is it a positive addition to our lives?

We will be taking part in PE on a Monday and Friday so children can wear their PE kits on these days – this consists of black leggings, shorts or jogging bottoms with a white t-shirt and trainers, as this may sometimes take place outside they can also wear hoodies or sweatshirts when necessary.

Gardening will take place on Thursday please ensure children are dressed warmly for this especially as the weather begins to get colder.
