Welcome to Year 5!

Our Learning for Spring 2

In History, we will be learning about the Ancient Maya of Mesoamerica, focusing on how we can compare ancient civilisations to others in different areas at similar times. We will learn about life in Ancient Mesoamerica, social structures, religious beliefs and everyday life for the Maya.

In English, 

In Maths, we will continue our work of multiplication and division and then develop our understanding of fractions.

In Science, we will be looking at forces and how we may apply our understanding of gravity and resistant forces for practical purposes. 

In Art, we will be looking at Chromatic art, focusing on portrait painting and the artists Sarah Biffin and Noor Bahjat.

In Music we will be investigating and celebrating the musical traditions of west and South and West Africa.

In PSHE we will be continuing to look at healthy relationship and learning more about puberty and how it may affect those going through it emotionally as well as physically.

In RE, 

In PE we will focus on gymnastics and more games in multi-sports.

In French we will continue learning about travel, different nationalities, then numbers to 50.

In Computing, we will investigate stop motion and develop our own animations using different technology

Our Learning for Spring 1 

In Geography, we will be learning about the United States, with a focus on comparing the Western United States to our region, Yorkshire and the Humber. We will be building on our knowledge and understanding of climate zones, biomes and how that can affect the lives of people who live there.

In English, we will be reading the book Malamander and taking inspiration from the characters and setting of Eerie-on-Sea. We will be writing a diary and a persuasive radio advert for a grand hotel. We will also be writing our own recipes for our veggie chilli that we will make in DT. Alongside our English, we will continue to learn about the morphology of words in spelling.

In Maths we will learn how to measure and calculate area and perimeter and then develop our multiplication and division skills.

Our topic in Science is all about life cycles. We will understand that all living things have a life cycle, including plants and invertebrates. We will learn how different living things reproduce and how their life cycles differ between kingdoms and animal families. 

In DT we will be learning about food production, healthy eating choices and how to develop a recipe. This will culminate in making our own vegetarian chilli.

In Music we will be inspired by the Holi festival and think about how music can be interpreted and represented in visual forms from light, colour and shape.

In PSHE we will be looking at care and responsibilities and how to recognise healthy or unhealthy relationships.

In RE we will be focussing on different Christian beliefs and covenants. 

In PE we will focus on dance around the world including ceilidh, northern soul and hip hop. We will also take part in different games including football, netball and dodgeball. 

In French we will continue learning about different counties, cities and travel around the world.

In Computing, we will be learning about data handling with a focus on the Mars Rover.

Our Learning for Autumn 2

In History, we will be learning all about the Vikings to find out whether they were more than the vicious raiders they are often portrayed as. We will learn about their culture and beliefs, the historic and political landscape of Anglo-Saxon Britain and the Danelaw and investigate the way of life for ordinary Viking settlers in the North of England. This will include a trip to the Jorvik Viking Centre in York!

In English, we will complete our Place Value of Grammar and Punctuation and begin reading the story 'Viking Boy' to inspire our writing of character descriptions and non-chronological report. We will also be writing poetry for Christmas and remembrance day, focussing on the symbolism of the poppy.

In Maths, we will continue building our understanding of place value up to 1,000,000; practise using addition and subtraction to solve problems, including inverse operations. We will look at interpreting data from graphs and tables and develop our understanding of multiplication and division.

In Science, we will be learning about the solar system. We will see the relationships between the different celestial bodies and how gravity affects the orbit of the planets around the sun and the moon around Earth. 

In DT we will be working on 3D sculpture,

In Music, we will be learning all about loops and how we can create and sequence layers of loops to create music. We will create beats using our bodies and non-standard scores as well as using digital workspaces like Garage Band to produce our own songs.

In PSHE/RHE, we will be looking at our personal strengths, ambitions and discussing how we can set achievable goals with small steps to help us succeed. We will understand that with focus, determination and vision we can achieve wonderful things.

In RE, we will learn about difference pilgrimages and special places to religions across the world. We will understand how journeys like this can be powerful experiences for people and wonder how their lives may be changed by them.

In PE,  On Mondays, the Calderdale Community Coaching Trust will be coming into school to lead multi-sports sessions including tag rugby, dodgeball and boccia. We will also practise our basketball skills each Friday.

In French, we will continue learning how to talk about the body, visiting the doctor and begin learning the names of towns and cities around the world.

In Computing, we will make links to our music by using computers to create music and soundscapes. We will use Scratch to practise giving commands, debugging and eventually creating a soundtrack for different genres of film.

Our Learning for Autumn 1

In Geography, our enquiry question is "What makes the counties of the UK unique?" We will investigate our local area, the administrative and historic bordering counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, the history and unique identities of the England's counties, how climate, landscape and soil type affect farming in different regions of the UK.

In English, we will complete a Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar unit concentrating on different nouns, verbs and clauses to create accurate sentence structure. This half term, we will be reading a selection of folk and traditional tales from around the UK, linking to our Geography enquiry. 

In Maths, we will learn about the place value of numbers up to 100,000. We will be practising rounding, ordering and comparing, and representing numbers in different ways with a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract models.

In Science, we will explore ‘Properties and Changes in Materials’ by answering the enquiry question, 'Can all materials change state?'. We will recap our learning on states of matter, understand why different materials are used for different purposes, and design and carry out our own investigations.

In Art, we will be looking closely at different styles of monochromatic art. We will investigate different artists, such as Mr Doodle; experiment with different techniques and media, and begin to develop our own styles of drawing in monochrome.

In Music, we will be immersing ourselves in the blues. We will look at its long history and impact on other genres, such as jazz, country and rock 'n' roll; We will learn to play the 12 bar blues and perform songs in a blues style.

In PSHE/RHE, we will answer the question, 'How can we manage and adapt to the changes in our friendships?', dealing with identity, peer pressure and our emotional and mental wellbeing. 

In RE, we will begin the unit called, ‘Why are some places and journeys special?' . .  It includes pilgrimages and spiritual journeys as well as metaphorical journeys through faith. 

In PE,  we will be developing our ball skills, accuracy, and team work in football, and also working on fundamental skills including speed, quickness and agility.

In French, we will be practising our communication skills, learning to ask and respond to questions around emotions and feelings, our bodies, and beginning to learn conversations about travel.

In Computing, we will continue building our understanding of how to stay safe online.
