Maths
“The definition of a good mathematical problem is the mathematics it generates rather than the problem itself.”
— Andrew Wiles, English Mathematician
Intent and approach
The 2014 National curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
At Ferney Lee, we appreciate that in order to do this, we need to develop confident mathematicians with a deep sense of number, the language to support reasoning and the resilience to apply all this to new problems. We create an ethos where every child feels motivated, supported and challenged to achieve. We want all of our children to develop a love of maths, alongside an appreciation for this learning's crucial place in the real-world. Our maths curriculum is carefully planned and taught, designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence. We follow a concrete- pictorial-abstract approach (CPA), which uses physical and visual aids to build a deeper understanding of abstract topics. Working through the stages of this approach supports our children to make links between mathematical concepts, key to being equipped to tackle new and varied problems.
